Did you anticipate a global pandemic...

...or is this a complete surprise?

I’ve heard quite a few comments from various talking heads saying no one saw this coming or that suggest we couldn’t have planned for such an unusual event. These sentiments puzzle me because I’ve been expecting a catastrophe like this for much of my adult life. It’s the reason I enjoy zombie shows and other apocalyptic fiction. None of what’s been going on lately is a shock to me. I’m not a fortune teller, mind you (despite my timely purchase of a bidet in February and our decision to finally buy that gym equipment in early March), I just think about these things a lot and global pandemic has always seemed like the most plausible scenario.

The most surreal thing about the pandemic is that it’s actually happening in my lifetime. I feel like I’m living in a movie. When I watch a show now, I’m momentarily disoriented by the normalcy of the setting. People hugging and shaking hands seems weird. I mean, haven’t they heard???

I admit, though, that not everyone shares my appetite for end-of-the-world speculation, so, I wonder if anyone here is truly surprised by covid-19?

Yeah no way was it a surprise, I've seen people claiming that in the media too here and there, and I just don't get it at all. I don't understand how they're even on the air talkin' like a Somebody when they apparently haven't been listening to a thing anyone has been saying for a long time now - it's only a matter of time before we're gonna get hit, and oh by the way, we're overdue. It's just like the earthquake that will inevitably swamp the West coast. Yeah it might not happen for another 10, 20, 50 years, or maybe even never. The point is that we're pretty damn sure it's overdue, and when it hits, it's gonna be really damn serious.

When Sars happened, there was a lot of talk from people in the know that this wouldn't be the last, and much worse could still be on it's way.  So it was just a matter of time, and it just so happens that the time is now, and I am right here in the middle of it, with the whole world as company.  Science fiction writers have written about world wide epidemics...they saw it coming, their readers also believed, and saw it coming.  Thing is, it's kind of like death, the death of someone you love, who has been sick for a long time.  You KNOW they are dying, you think you are prepared, but, when it actually happens, there is still grief, and pain, enough to knock you flat for a time, no matter how ready you thought you were.
